Class Descriptions

Friday, October 12th
Classes 2:30 pm – 4:45 pm

Color and Weave in Plain Weave
Checks, log cabin, and many small over-all designs can add interest to balanced plain weave. Weave off a scarf, towel, table runner, or wall hanging using one dark yarn and one light yarn for both warp and weft. Possible yarns: 3/2 perle cotton, or Harrisville Shetland, or 2/8 Maine Line wool for a 12-dent reed; Harrisville Highland or doubled 8/2 unmercerized cotton for a 10-dent reed. A draft will be sent to you.

Instructor: Helen Stoerzinger
Materials fee: $2.00
Class size: Limited to maximum of 8-10
What to bring: A rigid heddle frame loom or a table loom warped in dark and light, weft yarns, 2 shuttles, scissors, yarn needle, tape measure, and note-taking supplies.

Spinning Cotton Without Tears
Would you finally like to be able to spin that cotton in your stash, or find out how to set up your spinning wheel for spinning cotton more easily? You will learn how to prepare cotton for spinning, how to draft it smoothly while spinning, as well how to adjust your wheel for the easiest spinning. Even then some wheels are not well suited for spinning cotton, so the instructor will provide cotton spindles and you can learn the techniques on olden days technology.

Instructor: Nancy Preckshot
Materials fee: $5.00
Class size: Limited to 12
What to bring: Your spinning wheel (in case it can be adapted), or a charkha. If you have cotton carders, bring them, too.

Even Count Peyote Stitch

Instructor: Sue Bye
Material fee: $7.00
Class size: Limited to 10
What to bring: Scissors and magnifying glasses (if you need them).

Spool Knitting
Spool knitting is here again! There’s even a yahoo group devoted to it. In this class participants will learn to use spool knitters to create colorful cords that can be made into coasters, mats, pet leashes, and other imaginative things. No knitting experience is necessary to enjoy this class. The spool knitter is yours to keep, and you will go home with a small project and the knowledge to make many more.

Instructor: Traudi Bestler
Materials fee: $6.00 (for spool knitter, yours to keep at the end of class, handouts, and miscellaneous supplies.)
Class size: unlimited
What to bring: Small amounts of yarn from your stash, scissors, and yarn needle

Saturday October 13th
Morning Classes 9:30 am –11:45 pm

Intro to Bobbin Lace Making   THIS CLASS IS CLOSED – see new PM section
Bobbing lace making is one of the five true lace forms where all the lace is made from individual threads. Bobbin lace uses multiple threads at a time, much like weaving. The other 4 types of lace include: knitting, crocheting, tatting, and needle lace; which use only one thread at a time. Join me in making a bookmark. Learn the basic stitches and all the possibilities with bobbin lace making. Please let me know if you have previous experience and I will bring a more challenging project for you.

Instructor: Kelly Marshall
Materials fee: $5.00 (more if you want to keep the board and bobbins)
Class size: Limited to 8
What to bring: Pen and scissors.

Drum Carder Blending a Color Wheel
Use your drum carder to blend wool in the primary colors into a 12 segment color wheel ready to spin.

Instructor: Neal Goman
Class fee: $10.00
Class size: Limited to 8
What to bring: Student should bring a working drum carder suitable for fine wool, such as Merino, a scale capable of measuring to grams, plastic bags, pen/pencil, and note cards or post-it notes for labeling.

To Spindle or not to Spindle (small reed basket)
Make the perfect basket for your drop spindle and roving; or use it for ply split braiding or other supplies. Will make small basket with shoulder strap, or weave your own strap later on your inkle or card loom.

What to bring: Dishpan for water, spray bottle, 2 old towels, basket tools or flat screwdriver, shears /heavy scissors, tape measure or ruler, and pencil.

A Taste of Ply-Split Braiding
This class will give you a ‘taste’ of ply-split braiding. Ply splitting has been used for years by camel herders in northern India for girths, bridles, etc. We use ply split braiding for decorative pieces like belts, baskets, coasters, jewelry. We will learn the basic technique of ply split braiding called SCOT. Using a gripfid tool, you will make a key fob or bookmark to take with you.

Instructor: Dianne Stiff
Materials fee: $10.00 (Gripfids will be provided for the class. You may purchase one for $10.00 if you wish.)
Class size: 8 – 10
What to bring: All materials will be supplied by instructor.

Locker Hooking Coasters or Trivet
Using rug canvas, string and fabric strips, class participants will make one coaster and leave with enough materials to make 3 more. You can also choose to begin one trivet. Students will create a design to put on their piece and learn edging, filling and finishing techniques. Easy enough for a child with good eye hand coordination while challenging enough for adults to learn. A good portable project and a great way to use up long strips left from garment construction and quilting! We’ll even talk about ways to use other materials and recycled ones too!

Instructor: Celeste Suter
Materials fee: $15.00
Class size: Minimum 6 maximum 12+ (Suitable for ages 10 to adult)
What to bring: Scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, and mat (last three optional), and any fun fabric or yarn you’d like to incorporate. Additional supplies and books will be available after class.
